Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson Fight Cancelled

October 24th would’ve marked the date that Dustin Poirier & Tony Ferguson fought in the octagon. This bout was becoming highly anticipated amongst UFC supporters. However, financial disputes between UFC President Dana White & Dustin Poirier have prompted this fight into cancellation. This has become a new standard in the Ultimate Fighting Competition, which was known for paying their prominent stars with high wages. That changes amid the COVID-19 Pandemic & now MMA athletes under contract are receiving lower salaries then initially discussed. It’s prompted multiple competitors to retire, including Henry Cejudo & Conor McGregor.

Similar problems have unfolded for Dustin Poirier, who announced via ESPN that he’ll now be competing on October 24th. It follows after negotiations failed, with both parties maintaining different terms & unable to reach any mutual agreement. This isn’t very reassuring for Dustin Poirier, who proved his eagerness to compete against Tony Ferguson by travelling from Louisiana to South Florida last week. He’d start his training camp immediately, hoping that his determination would prompt an agreement being met. Poirier confirmed that he’d return home by September 14th.

ESPN Reporters questioned Dustin Poirier on why negotiations didn’t follow through with Dana White & the UFC. The former lightweight champion evoked that being a prizefighter deserves respectable compensation, which wasn’t offered in their negotiations. Poirier evoked that his prize for winning has to be large if a championship belt isn’t on the line.

UFC Supporters have expressed disappointment towards this announcement on social media. Dustin Poirier & Tony Ferguson was slated to become the Co-Main Event for UFC 254. They would’ve fought an hour before Khabib Nurmagomedov & Justin Gaethje. It would’ve been a dramatic evening considering that Justin Gaethje had recently dethroned Tony Ferguson, and Khabib Nurmagomedov had previously defeated Dustin Poirier.

Potential Scenarios

Contract negotiations allowed for potentially great fights to take place if Gaethje or Nurmagomedov backed down. Justin Gaethje removing his contention from concerns over COVID would’ve allowed Tony Ferguson to enter the octagon as his replacement. Khabib Nurmagomedov not competing because of COVID would’ve given Dustin Poirier a championship-winning opportunity against Gaethje. However, those bouts aren’t possible after Poirier’s ESPN confirmation.
