Chuck Liddell May Join Golden Boy Promotions

In 2010, after suffering multiple knockout losses, the banner child of the UFC, Chuck Liddell retired from fighting. For Dana White, a long-time friend of Liddell’s, it was a relief and one he urged the prize fighter to do and one that saw Liddell leave the cage and head into the management side of the business.

After the sale of the UFC to WME-IMG and the victim of corporate downsizing. Liddell found himself out of a job, one that he loved. Talk began about a comeback, and for Liddell, that meant signing with a new promotion team, one that found him in discussions to fight Tito Ortiz with none other than Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Liddell, in a recent interview, stated,

“You know, when we had the meeting, I thought[De La Hoya was talking about doing a one-off. And we got an interview with him and he was like, ‘Yeah, no, I want to start an MMA promotion.’ We haven’t had any further talks on that yet, but we will be talking.”

It is that statement that has his long-time friend hopeful that his friend will remain in retirement and that his interest in working with De La Hoys promotional company is one based on business, not sport. White stated that he is hoping Liddell will go into business with De La Hoya, and not fight.

However, it seems that Liddell has different feelings and while he may go into business with De La Hoya in the future, this deal is all about coming out of retirement to face Ortiz once again. He even went so far as to say, “I will fight again.”

Liddell also commented during the interview that,

“I miss it. I never stopped missing I, I hadn’t really thought about it much, and when Tito brought it up and we started to get going – I started training, I started doing stuff again, getting ready to try to take this on – it made me go, ‘You know what? What if he pulls out? Am I not going to fight? Am I going to do all this and not fight? Oh no, we’ve got to have somebody to back it up.’ If it doesn’t work out with him, I’m going to give it a shot. It’ll be somebody else. One of the guys from my past, most likely. And we’ll see where I’m at.”

Dana White Not Confident in De La Hoya

While Liddell may have confidence in Oscar De La Hoya, for Dana White, he feels the “golden boy” isn’t the brightest saying,

“I don’t know what he’s thinking. Hopefully Chuck’s going to be his business partner and not fight. The last thing I want to do is sh-t on Chuck Liddell, because I love him, but I asked him to retire 10 years ago for a reason.”

Liddell on the other hand, Liddell and White have not spoken about his intention to return to fighting but White is happy to make his feelings know, as President of the UFC, and as a friend. At this stage, there is not anything firm on the possible bout between Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.
