Hector Lombard vs. Jake Shields Targeted for UFC 171 on March 15 in Dallas

After telling MMAjunkie he wanted a fight with fellow welterweight Jake Shields (29-6-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC), Hector Lombard (33-4-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) received his wish.

UFC officials recently announced the bout, via ESPN.com, for UFC 171.

UFC 171 takes place March 15 at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The main card, featuring a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie. Lombard vs. Shields likely will be part of the main card.

This past week, Lombard said he might be able to force the “boring” Shields into a good bout.

“I think he’s been so boring and me always trying for the KO, it’s going to be exciting,” Lombard said. “He’ll make it boring, or I’m going to end up knocking him out. It’s going to be one or another.”

Demain Maia & Rory MacDonald to Face Off at UFC 170 in Las Vegas

An important welterweight fight has been added to UFC 170.

Rory MacDonald vs. Demian Maia will take place on the Feb. 22 card in Las Vegas, the promotion announced Friday. News of the fight being in the works was first reported on FOX Sports 1’s “UFC Tonight.”

Both MacDonald (15-2) and Maia (18-5) are coming off loses. MacDonald dropped a unanimous decision to Robbie Lawler at UFC 167 in November, while Maia lost a split decision to Jake Shields at UFC Fight Night 29 in October. MacDonald’s loss snapped a fight-fight winning streak, while Maia’s streak ended at three wins in a row.

UFC 170, which will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, will be headlined byRashad Evans vs. Daniel Cormier.

Danny Castillo Battles Edson Barboza at UFC on Fox 9 This Weekend in Sacramento

Danny Castillo Battles Edson Barboza at UFC on Fox 9 This Weekend in Sacramento

UFC on FOX 9 could also be known as UFC: Team Alpha Male.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues to stack its return to California’s state capital with hometown fan favorites. The latest addition is a lightweight bout between Edson Barboza vs. Danny Castillo and is set to go down on Dec. 14, 2013 at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

Castillo, who trains nearby at Team Alpha Male, joins team founder Urijah Faber, who meets Michael McDonald, and Chad Mendes, who fights Nik Lentz, as the plethora of local gym fighters on the card.

UFC officials announced the fight on Wednesday.

“Last Call” has won back-to-back fights since suffering a knockout loss to Michael Johnson (who found out his next fight today, too) nearly a year ago. He went on to beat Paul Sass at UFC on FUEL TV 7 by way of unanimous decision and then in July, at UFC on FOX 8, he outpointed Tim Means for his fifth win in six fights.

He won’t have it easy.

The Brazilian-born Barboza also has won two straight fights since an upset loss to Jamie Varner, who knocked him out in the first round at UFC 146 back in May 2012. Since that setback, the first of his MMA career, Barboza has stopped Lucas Martins at UFC on FX 7 in January, then finished Rafaello Oliveira with leg kicks at UFC 162 in July, which I saw in person and it was nasty.

Jake Shields is Looking for Rematch with Robbie Lawler; Promises Another Submission

Jake Shields is Looking for Rematch with Robbie Lawler; Promises Another Submission

Prior to UFC 167 taking place, top ten welterweight contender Jake Shields had targeted Rory MacDonald as a potential next opponent thinking that beating Georges St-Pierre’s teammate would be the fastest path to another shot at the Canadian champion.

As it turns out, MacDonald lost a split decision that night to Robbie Lawler that forced the entire division to shift as the long-time veteran jumped all the way up to No. 3 in the rankings once the dust settled. Today, Lawler and MacDonald swapped positions in the new UFC rankings to No. 4 and No. 3, respectively.

The No. 7-ranked Shields is now looking right at Lawler for his next fight for a number of reasons.  First, Lawler is ranked above him in the top ten currently, but maybe the bigger factor at play is the fact that Shields has already defeated him.  Shields fought Lawler while both were a part of Strikeforce in 2009 in a catchweight bout at 182 pounds.

It took Shields just over two minutes to finish Lawler with a guillotine choke, and he’s happy to give the Iowa native a rematch as they are both gunning for the top of the division.

“Personally, that’s a fight I would love,” Shields told FOX Sports on Monday.  “I beat him but the fight was so fast it was only a few minutes and I caught him in a choke.  I’m sure that’s a loss he would love to avenge and he’s been doing so good.  I think we’re both at the top of the division, it’s a fight I would love.

“I was hoping to fight Rory (MacDonald) and Lawler went and pulled the upset.  I’m like yeah now that makes sense.  I’m sure that’s a loss he would like to get off his record. I would love to fight him as well.  Robbie’s always a guy I liked and respected, but he’s doing so well, we’re both on big win streaks, it makes sense.”
