Martial arts have been around for a very long time, but it’s around this time now where gyms are starting to accept martial arts into their programs. Specifically mixed martial arts. Even though that is happening, it may be wise to consider taking a vanilla martial arts (like kra maga, tae kwon do, karate, etc.) first, especially with kids.

As a child, there are many benefits to taking martial arts. Furthermore these benefits also apply to others who are practicing martial arts.

Balance and Posture

This is a problem for many people regardless of age, but it most likely stems from when we were between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. It’s a very basic skill but it gets often overlooked. By practicing martial arts you need to be in particular stances and as such you need to maintain a certain posture, but also balance. Poor posture leads to cramped organs, improper breathing, and more.

Memorization and Retention

When we get older, some of us claim that we have poor memory or forget things often. But even as a child, this can happen as well. For children they need to remember their parents phone numbers, emergency contact, and many other things. Martial arts can assist with memory and retention as you’ll have to memorize the particular stances and even some of the movements.

Self-Esteem and Confidence Building

Regardless of your age, there will be periods of time where you lack confidence or have a low self esteem. There are many studies that show that fitness can help with boosting those areas as you are getting closer to getting the ideal body you want. Martial arts for that matter is a series of exercises. Not to mention going through classes ensures you have others who are positive and are lifting you up as well.

Self-Discipline

In order to get better at something you need to practice. If you slip up on your practices, that’ll get noticed. But by devoting yourself to practice that can be filtered into various aspects of your life. For children they learn the importance of focusing and not getting distracted will ensure that they will succeed and grow. For older individuals that’s the same case but martial arts provides a facility for us to practice further.

Physical Fitness

For children, it’s important for them to learn this at a very early age as child obesity is becoming a more prominent issue. Obviously marital arts will help in losing weight and developing muscles, but for adults this really gets driven home too. In order to be healthy and continue martial arts training, it’s important to be eating properly. Children will begin to learn that while for adults this lesson gets reinforced, prompting the individual to start changing how they are living.

There are many other benefits to martial arts training for kids and adults, however these also can be moved into mixed martial arts trainings as well. Let alone any other type of physical fitness.

After all there are many actors in Hollywood who grew up learning how to do a variety of martial arts and even used those skills on the big screen. Here’s 10 star actors who kick ass in martial arts!

Iko Uwais

Iko Uwais is one of the youngest actors that hits this list at 34 years old. Since his career is just getting started, action fans can get excited to be seeing more of this guy. He first appeared in 2009’s Merantau, hand picked by filmmaker Gareth Evans who spotted Uwais in his Silat dojo. That being said, he didn’t make it big until his second collaboration in 2012’s The Raid.

Jim Kelly

Jim Kelly was a multiple time world champion in the early 70’s before he turned to acting. It all started with him opening a Shorin-ryu Kaarate school in LA. From there, Jerry Weintraud, producer of Enter the Dragon, found Kelly and brought him onto the film. Starring with the famous Bruce Lee, the amazing response from this film bolstered Kelly’s acting career, allowing him to star in a few other films like Black Belt Jones, and Three The Hard Way. Because of Kelly amazing performance, he helped pave the road for other black martial artists to enter the scene.

Yen broke into the business in 1983 as a stuntman in China. While overseas though, he started playing supporting roles and helped a lot in films like Highlander: Endgame, Blade 2, and Shanghai Knights. But what brought him into the spotlight was his role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Jet Li

Following behind the work of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, Jet Li has achieved incredible fame in his homeland before arriving to Hollywood. What broke him into Hollywood film was his role as the villain in 1997’s Lethal Weapon 4. Since then he’s been steadily working in other films since then. They may not be as popular as the film Hero, but he starred in films like Romeo Must Die, The One and War, which are still worth checking out.

Jackie Chan

Famous for doing his own stunts, this man is a loveable character both in film and in real life. He had small roles in Bruce Lee’s films before breaking out into stardom. Films that really helped him to shine was his roles in films like the Rush Hour series, Shanghai Noon and The Forbidden Kingdom.

What also separates CrossFit Defense from the others is this a full-contact self-defence class. Because of this, many people from CrossFit users to professional MMA players can use this training for various reasons. This training works well if you are looking to boost confidence, but MMA stars also practice CrossFit Defense to use as training for a fight. Furthermore those who are in CrossFit use this as a means of expanding into other areas.

One month after signaling an interest to open a new UFC women’s division, the promotion has gone all in on strawweights.

UFC President Dana White today announced the promotion has acquired the contracts of 11 Invicta FC fighters, who will compete on the first all-women season of “The Ultimate Fighter” for the inaugural UFC strawweight title.

Filming for the show kicks off May 18 and features Carla Esparza (9-2), Alex Chambers(4-1), Claudia Gadelha (11-0), Felice Herrig (9-5), Bec Hyatt (5-3), Emily Kagan (3-1), Juliana Lima (6-1), Rose Namajunas (2-1),Tecia Torres (4-0), Paige VanZant (3-1) and Joanne Calderwood (8-0). A debut date for the first episode wasn’t immediately announced.
